Desiring Peace: What we can learn from Dag Hammarskjöld today

parabola-cover-100The story of the inner life and vision of the renowned United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld has much to teach us about the quality of temperament needed to move the complex, resistant structures that govern us toward peace. Roger Lipsey has written a fascinating study of the man’s methods and qualities in the fall 2010 issue of Parabola. It is gratifying that Lipsey cites the Garrison Institute’s mission statement to illuminate how the intentions of Hammarskjöld’s mid-twentieth-century project telescope with such great foresight to the pressing public concerns of today, but this article contains much more to consider.
