Awareness and Concentration in Teaching Weekend Retreats for Teachers: Fall 2007 and Spring 2008

The Garrison Institute's Initiative on Contemplation & Education addresses two of the most critical problems facing schools across the country: how to increase student academic achievement and how to create healthy school environments that improve children's abilities to become responsible, productive and caring adults. The Initiative seeks to greatly improve children's capacity to focus their attention and regulate their behavior, especially among children impacted by numerous risk factors such as poverty, violence and divorce.

Mission, Vision and Strategies

The Initiative on Contemplation and Education is committed to integrating evidence-based contemplative methodologies into K-12 educational settings to improve students' academic, social and emotional outcomes. We see a future in which contemplative techniques will be applied in a large percentage of K-12 classrooms across the US. We plan to achieve our mission by utilizing four critical strategies:

  • Develop and implement research programs to investigate how contemplative-based interventions for both teachers and children facilitate social-emotional and cognitive development.

  • Advance the field by promoting research, initiating new research partnerships and promoting cross-fertilization of ideas among educators, developmental psychologists and neuroscientists.

  • Work with educators to promote the use of contemplative techniques in school settings.

  • Engage in advocacy activities leading to the increased introduction, use and institutionalization of contemplative techniques in school settings.
  • Contact Kari Snowberg for more information on our Initiative on Contemplation and Education.
