In-Person Retreat with Cynthia Bourgeault – Integral Light Shining in the Dark: Journey to the Heart

To attend this retreat all guests, teachers, and staff are required to be fully vaccinated for Covid-19. A medical exemption with documentation from a doctor requires a negative Covid-19 test taken within 72 hours of arrival as well as a personal quarantine for 72 hours before arriving on site.

In this first-of-a-kind immersion retreat, Rev. Dr. Cynthia Bourgeault will take us on a deep dive into the profoundly Christian and incarnational mysticism at the root of Jean Gebser’s Integral Evolutionary theory.

In this season of Advent, we will explore how some of Gebser’s core ideas, particularly around time, transparency, spiritual generativity, and “intensification of the present” open up whole new windows of insight on classic advent themes. Equally, we will explore how the great incarnational themes of Advent shelter and context Gebser’s thinking, transforming it from an intellectual tour de force to a luminous offering of the heart.

This will be an in-person silent retreat, grounded in meditation and embodied prayer. An established meditation practice (by any method) is required; prior familiarity with the teaching of Jean Gebser is strongly recommended. If you’re a newcomer to the Gebserian terrain, Jeremy Johnson’s Seeing Through the World offers a concise and enormously helpful overview.

The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Bourgeault is an Episcopal priest and writer. She has been a long-time advocate of the meditative practice of Centering Prayer and has worked closely with fellow teachers and colleagues including Thomas Keating, Bruno Barnhart, and Richard Rohr. Bourgeault has actively participated in numerous inter-spiritual dialogues and events with luminaries and leaders such as A.H. Almaas, Kabir Helminski, Swami Atmarupananda, and Rami Shapiro. Bourgeault is a member of the GPIW (Global Peace Initiative for Women) Contemplative Council and recipient of the 2014 Contemplative Voices award from Shalem Institute. She is a founding Director of both The Contemplative Society and the Aspen Wisdom School. She is also the author of many books, including The Holy Trinity and the Law of Three, The Meaning of Mary Magdalene, The Wisdom Jesus, Centering Prayer and Inner Awakening, Mystical Hope, and others.
