Practice Mindfulness on the Spring Equinox: A Special Retreat on How to Meditate
This retreat will focus on the practice of meditation, appealing to new meditators, those with a developed practice, and those simply seeking renewal in the serenity of a contemplative environment. Retreat practice provides the opportunity to step away from the speed and habitual patterns of our daily life, providing the space for us to deepen our practice and understanding. We will begin with learning how to meditate, progress to examining ourselves and our practice thoroughly, including working on bringing mindfulness into daily life including working with our emotions. The program will consist of sitting and walking meditation, talks and guided meditations, group discussion, and yoga. During breaks, one can walk our labyrinth and trails, relax in the saunas, or simply enjoy the contemplative setting. Talks and guided meditations will be derived from the book Mindfulness in Action by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche; each participant will receive a free copy.
Our caterer, Fresh Company, will provide healthy, delicious vegetarian meals, featuring locally grown and produced ingredients, served buffet-style. For those with food sensitivities, ingredients will be listed for each dish served. For those with special dietary needs, you may bring any supplemental items you require.
This retreat will be held in partial silence.
Jane Kolleeny has been studying and practicing Buddhism since the early seventies when her teacher Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche arrived in Boulder, Colorado. A native Coloradan, she moved to New York in 1990 and taught classes at the New York Shambhala Center for many years, organizing and teaching at the Tuesday dharma gatherings for nine years. She serves as Retreats and Business Development Director at the Garrison Institute, producing over 100 retreats a year. She lives in Sleepy Hollow with her husband Derek and two dogs. She is a cofounder of the Westchester Buddhist Center where she teaches regularly. She has completed the 8-week MBSR training and has taught meditation to a variety of groups at the Garrison Institute including student groups and staff retreats for nonprofits.
Derek Kolleeny began the practice and study of Buddhism in 1976 and became a student of Trungpa Rinpoche. He earned a B.A. from Harvard College in the Comparative Study of World Religions, focused on Buddhism, including study of Sanskrit and Tibetan languages. In 1987 he earned an MBA from Columbia Business School in 1989. He served as CFO for various companies and not-for-profit organizations for almost 25 years and now does freelance consulting. He teaches Buddhist meditation and philosophy regularly at Westchester Buddhist Center, a community that meets weekly in Irvington and Mt. Kisco, NY, and at Rime Shedra NYC. He also provides training in mindfulness at schools and organizations.
Teresa Peppard has 30 years of experience in martial art forms and has been teaching Tai Chi for 20 years. She continues her studies with fourth generation Master Alex Dong. Teresa is also a licensed massage therapist with a special interest in craniosacral therapy. Combining her bodywork experience with Tai Chi, she hopes to inspire others to know their bodies better and trust their natural capabilities. Class participants often come away with practical exercises they can integrate into daily life.
