Virtual Workshop: An Evening with Love with Dr. Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz

“An Evening With Love” is an evening retreat that aims to celebrate love during our turbulent times.
Dr. Sealey-Ruiz will present her Archaeology of the Self theory, and read from her full-length book, Love from the Vortex and Other Poems—an artifact of her archeological dig on love and intimacy. This event explores the questions below and countless others that are at intersection of history, social justice, education, and our shared humanity.

• Why and how do we so naturally skew our thoughts and intensions of love towards romance?
• Why, when we get hurt, do we slip into pain and sorrow instead of embracing other forms of love that can bring us comfort?
• How can profound love penetrate how we engage in our vocations and our work to respond to the world’s most pressing problems?

Dr. Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz is an award-winning associate professor at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her research focuses on racial literacy in teacher education, Black girl literacies, and Black and Latinx male high school students. A sought-after speaker on issues of race, culturally responsive pedagogy, and diversity, Sealey-Ruiz works with K-12 and higher education school communities to increase their racial literacy knowledge and move toward more equitable school experiences for their Black and Latinx students. Sealey-Ruiz appeared in Spike Lee’s 2 Fists Up: We Gon’ Be Alright, a documentary about the Black Lives Matter movement and the campus protests at Mizzou. Her first full-length book of poetry Love from the Vortex & Other Poems was released in March, 2020 (Kalediscope Vibrations).
