SUMMARY:Beyond the Mirror: Opening to a Boundless Sense of Self
DESCRIPTION:A DharmaPunx NYC Labor Day Retreat\n  \nJoin us for an in-person retreat over Labor Day weekend as we turn our collective attention toward one of the most liberating inquiries of the Buddhist path: expanding our awareness past our vulnerable identity beliefs—our sense of feeling separate\, unique\, damaged or alone. This small sense of self is shaped by vulnerability\, ongoing social comparison\, feelings of ‘not keeping up with others’ or ‘falling behind.’ \nAnd yet\, outside of this narrow identity there lies what we may call the “transcendent self”—a spacious awareness rooted in a sense of connectedness\, belonging\, fully arriving in one’s life. Freedom from suffering rests upon loosening the grip of the little self so that we can experience life more fully\, with wisdom and kindness for all beings\, including ourselves. \nRooted in meditation\, Buddhist teachings\, and somatic practice\, this retreat invites us to examine the habitual narratives that shape our sense of identity and keep us tethered to cycles of fear\, separation\, and suffering (dukkha). Through cultivating awareness and compassion\, we begin to see the self not as a solid entity\, but as a collection of conditioned experiences. As these constructions soften\, we gain access to a deeper\, freer way of being. \nThe title Beyond the Mirror points to this path of ego transcendence—where the burdens of our personal history\, fears\, and fixations begin to fall away\, replaced by a spacious presence and a relaxed\, interconnected awareness. The illusion of separateness dissolves\, and we begin to experience life from a transpersonal perspective—open\, available\, and unburdened. \nThis retreat will explore four core pathways to this freedom: \nMeditation Practices – Sitting and walking practices that cultivate concentration\, stillness\, and insight\, allowing the mind to rest in silence and clarity. \nRelational Connection – Interpersonal practices that help dissolve the illusion of separateness by tuning into shared human experiences\, emotions\, and existential truths. \nSomatic Awareness – Embodied practices\, including yoga\, breathwork\, and Somatic Experiencing\, that support nervous system regulation and help us drop the narrative of self by returning to the felt sense. \nSkillful Reflection – Dharma teachings and cognitive tools that point the way toward freedom—not by fixing the self\, but by seeing through it with wisdom and kindness. \nThis retreat is open to both new and experienced practitioners. Whether you are stepping onto the path for the first time or deepening a long-standing practice\, you are warmly welcome. We will also offer yoga/movement as an option in this session. \nTogether\, we’ll explore what becomes possible when we move beyond the mirror—and into the mystery of who we truly are. \nThis is an in-person retreat appropriate for both new and experienced practitioners. \n\n  \nTEACHERS\n  \n\n Josh Korda has been the guiding teacher of DharmaPunx NYC since 2005\, and is a regular visiting teacher at Zen Care. He has a large Buddhist mentoring private practice and regularly authors pieces for Lion’s Roar\, Tricycle and Buddhadharma. More information and links to his podcast at www.dharmapunxnyc.com \n  \n  \n  \nKathy Cherry is a Somatic Experiencing® practitioner\, Mindfulness & Meditation instructor and coach with over two decades of dedicated mindfulness practice in the Insight Meditation tradition. She combines Somatic Experiencing® with Mindfulness and Buddhist teachings to create an integrative approach that helps connect the intellect\, body\, and senses to facilitate health and regulation. Her style emphasizes embodiment\, compassion\, and practical wisdom both in meditation practice and in everyday life. SUMMARY:Breath\, Body\, Mind Workshop with Ron Hershey
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is designed for anyone looking to develop better coping skills for handling stress and anxiety\, and will incorporate ancient and modern techniques to improve physical and emotional well-being. Based on the work of the eminent integrative psychiatrist and author\, Dr. Richard Brown of Columbia University\, this approach utilizes repeated rounds of gentle movement\, guided breathing and meditation to address imbalances of our stress response system. \nAppropriate for anyone regardless of their level of previous experience with breathwork or meditation. \n  \nTIMING\nThe course will run from 2:30 p.m. ET to 5:30 p.m. ET on Saturday September 13\, 2025. \nCheck-in will run from 2:15 p.m. ET to 2:30 p.m. ET \n  \n  \nAbout Breath-Body-Mind\nThis approach has been used very successfully with those who have been previously frustrated in their attempts to meditate. Long time meditators have reported an added dimension to their practices with the BBM approach. Combining simple coordinated movements borrowed from Chinese Qi Gong and a technique known as coherent breathing\, Breath-Body-Mind has been found helpful in the treatment of PTSD. It has been taught to large groups as part of mission relief work in disaster areas such as civil-war torn Sudan and Rwanda\, post-tsunami Japan\, and in post-9/11 New York City\, to traumatized first responders. \n  \n  \nTEACHER\n \nRon Hershey is a nationally board-certified acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist in practice for 28 years. He has studied and taught this approach for the past 14 years. He considers it the single most effective approach for stress and anxiety management. \n  \n  \n_______ \n  \nCOVID-19\nThe health and safety of our guests and staff is a top priority for the Garrison Institute. To attend a retreat or event all guests\, teachers\, and staff are required to self-test (at home antigen test is acceptable) within the 48-hour window prior to arriving for a retreat on site\, and to bring a 2nd self-test kit when coming on site. We encourage everyone to self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 and other illnesses before your visit. SUMMARY:Becoming Bodhisattvas - Confidence and Lineage
DESCRIPTION:A silent meditation retreat with Ethan Nichtern\, Maho Kawachi\, Lou Sharma and Heather Shaw\nMany of us are longing for an in-depth\, in-person meditation retreat. This is a great opportunity to do so. Like last year\, this retreat will focus on practices and teachings related to the path of the Bodhisattva\, a body of teachings all about a compassionate and wise way of being in world in turmoil. \nThis year we will focus on the theme of Lineage. Each year of this retreat is similarly structured\, and designed to be welcoming to new students\, while still offering a richness of new practices and insights for returning participants. This retreat will include three full days of silence practice so that we can go much deeper into our own experience and support each other’s practice in a way we almost never get to do when we’re in our daily grinds. On the last full day of retreat\, we take more time to process the teachings together in an interpersonal and communal way. \nAt this year’s retreat\, we will practice ample mindfulness meditation. The teachings of the retreat will focus further on teachings and practices from Ethan’s newest book\, Confidence. We will explore “The Four Powers of Confidence\,” with a focus on discovering\, imagining\, and harnessing the deep power that lies dormant in each of our lineages – your ancestral lineage\, your cultural heritage\, and your spiritual lineages of awakening. We will again focus on the pithy meditation practice of “Windhorse\,” along with teachings on how to invoke the support of your lineage and work with any wounds or obstacles that might be present for you when you look to your ancestral and spiritual heritage.” There is no expectation that students are familiar with these concepts before attending retreat! \n  \nTAKING REFUGE\nThe retreat will include the opportunity to formally take either the Refuge or Bodhisattva Vow\, or reaffirm your vows if you have already taken them\, on Friday afternoon\, October 3rd. As we will be approaching the vow from the structure of the Tantric (Vajrayana) Buddhist system\, it is required that a student has already taken the Refuge vows in any lineage if they want to formally enter the Bodhisattva Path. \nIf you would like to formally take the Refuge or Bodhisattva Vow for the first time (it is generally not recommended to take both simultaneously\, but to leave 6 months to a year between the two to work with one before moving on to the next)\, please email connect@ethannichtern.com with your intention. If you do not want to formally take either vow\, you are still more than welcome to attend the ceremony and contemplate the intention and practice of making the commitment to awakening in your own way. The vows are fully optional. Buddhist people\, Buddh-ish people\, and those of us who just can’t stand labels are all welcome at this retreat! \nWe hope you can join this growing annual community of practitioners. \n  \nRecommended Reading\n(bring to the retreat\, or we will have copies on site for sale) \nConfidence: Holding Your Seat through Life’s Eight Worldly Wins by Ethan Nichtern \nFurther Recommending Readings will be shared prior to  the retreat. \n \nTEACHERS\n  \nHead Teacher – Ethan Nichtern \nEthan Nichtern is a Senior Buddhist teacher\, and is the author of the acclaimed book The Road Home: A Contemporary Exploration of the Buddhist Path which was selected as one of Library Journal’s Best Books of 2015\, and one of Tech Insider’s “9 Books That Define 2015.” He is the author of three other books\, and his next book Confidence: Holding Your Seat Through Life’s Eight Wordly Winds. \nEthan founded the Interdependence Project\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to secular Buddhist practice and transformational activism and arts\, and served as executive Director from 2007-2011. \nFor the past 21 years\, Ethan has taught meditation and Buddhist psychology classes and workshops around New York City and North America and Europe\, along with working with students privately. He has primarily studied in the Shambhala and other Tibetan traditions\, but has also studied Theravadan and Soto Zen Buddhism. He is also an avid yoga practitioner. He served as Shastri\, or Senior Teacher-In-Residence\, for the Shambhala Meditation Center of New York\, from 2010-2018. \n  \nAssistant Teacher – Maho Kawachi \nMaho Kawachi was born and raised in Tokyo\, Japan. She landed in NYC in 1992 and decided to make the city her home. She encountered meditation in 2000\, and studied in the lineage of Insight Meditation and Vipassana until she entered Vajrayana Path in 2008. Her training as a meditation teacher includes Interedependence Project\, MMTCP\, etc. She teaches at Open Heart Project and assists teaching for Dharma Moon Year Long Buddhist Study. She also volunteered at Rikers Island/s women’s facility. Her new interest is combining meditation and outdoor experience and leading the experience to students. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAssistant Teacher – Lou Sharma \nLou Sharma has practiced meditation for over a decade\, and has studied Dharma within Tibetan Buddhist traditions since 2016. In 2021\, she completed Dharma Moon’s Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Training. Lou is interested in the ways mindfulness can empower more compassionate cultures of work\, inspired by 10+ years of experience as a corporate researcher and brand strategist. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nYoga Teacher – Heather Shaw \nSince 1998\, Heather has been a student of yoga and meditation\, steeped in the traditions of Tibetan Buddhism\, as well as Western psychotherapy and neuroscience.
