SUMMARY:A 5-Day Silent Retreat with Cynthia Bourgeault and David Frenette
DESCRIPTION:Flowing Oneness\nThe Contemplative Vision of Father Thomas Keating\nLed by Cynthia Bourgeault and David Frenette \n  \nIn this eagerly awaited Centering Prayer teaching retreat\, Centering Prayer master teachers Davd Frenette and Cynthia Bourgeault once again team up to explore the late teachings of Fr. Thomas Keating and what they have to offer our own continuing spiritual evolution today. \n  \nAs Thomas fully embraced his nondual awakening\, he began to write and see from a perspective rarely attained in the Christian mystical tradition\, significantly “growing” the Christian spiritual roadmap in the direction of his signature brand of “flowing oneness.” \n  \nThrough teaching\, dialogue\, guided meditations — and mostly through the practice of Centering Prayer itself — David and Cynthia will jointly explore how he charts this new course —and more important\, how he has planted practical seeds to bring our practice of Centering Prayer to the next level. \n  \nPracticing Centering Prayer in light of the God of unity consciousness grounds us\, more and more\, in a reality that cannot be shaken by the crises of separation\, disruption\, and disintegration we are living through. From greater oneness through Centering Prayer flows the subtlety of contemplative service: God in us serving God in others. \n  \n  \n \n\nSCHOLARSHIPS\n  \nPlease note that we are no longer accepting scholarship applications for this gathering. We thank you for your interest and overwhelming response; we are still reviewing the applications we have received. We regret that we are not able to assist as we had more applicants than our funding can underwrite. For more information on our scholarship funds\, please visit this page. \n\n  \nTEACHERS\n  \n  \nThe Rev. Dr. Cynthia Bourgeault is an Episcopal priest and writer. Bourgeault is a member of the GPIW (Global Peace Initiative for Women) Contemplative Council and recipient of the 2014 Contemplative Voices award from Shalem Institute. She is a founding Director of both The Contemplative Society and the Aspen Wisdom School. David has led Centering Prayer retreats at leading venues across the country\, including 6 years at the Garrison Institute. His primary work is in developing spiritual and religious resources for contemplative practitioners\, and supporting a unitive approach to meditation that includes body\, mind\, heart and spirit. David lives with his wife Donna in the Pacific Northwest\, where he enjoys hiking in old growth forests\, sampling Portland’s gluten-free food carts\, listening to Beethoven\, and meditating in his backyard studio shed.\n \n  \n  \nACCOMMODATIONS \nThere are Single\, Double and Dorm rooms available. SUMMARY:The Three Pillars of Wakefulness: Stability\, Openness and Kindness
DESCRIPTION:Westchester Meditation Center’s 13th Annual Retreat\nIncluding guest teacher Judy Lief\nAt the Garrison Institute\, March 6-13\, 2026\n\nWinter is a natural time to deepen our practice \nPlease join us for our annual retreat \nPractitioners of all levels are warmly welcomed\nThis retreat includes a separate track for vajrayana practitioners\n  \n\nMany people are drawn to meditation as a means to develop more serenity and clarity. But a deeper transformation of our experience is possible. A well-established meditation practice grounds us deeply in an openness that is also clear\, flexible and resilient. We are then better able to rise to life’s challenges with the kindness of an open heart. \nA week-long immersive retreat is a powerful way to deepen our relationship to meditation and see its benefits. With a settled mind\, we can tune into our innate wellbeing and our open heart. Mindfulness-awareness meditation\, fully understood\, can directly support overcoming our fixed\, inflexible patterns\, and allow the emergence of a more stable attitude of acceptance and kindness. We hope you can join us in exploring and fine-tuning these qualities that our world needs more than ever. \nSurrounded by natural beauty and far from the clamor of our busy lives\, Garrison Institute offers the ideal environment for deep contemplative practice. We welcome both new and experienced practitioners to attend this retreat. \nThe retreat will be jointly led by Judy Lief\, a senior teacher in the tradition of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and master editor of his works\, and the senior teachers of the Westchester Meditation Center\, Derek and Jane Kolleeny and Gene Bobker. \nThis mostly silent retreat will be primarily focused on sitting meditation\, but the daily schedule will also include walking meditation\, dharma talks\, discussion groups\, two individual meetings with a meditation instructor\, yoga\, and free time. \nA separate vajrayana track* will include talks on the Experiential Song of The View of Luminous Mahamudra Called ‘The Music of Great Bliss’ by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. \n*Separate shrine rooms for prostrators\, ngondro and sadhana practitioners will be available. \n\nSCHOLARSHIPS\n  \nPlease note that scholarship applications are now closed. SUMMARY:Refuge in the Ark: A Jewish Mindfulness Retreat
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE CLICK HERE TO REGISTER\n  \n\n\nWhen the seas of our lives are especially chaotic\, it can be healthy to take temporary refuge in a sheltered place — like Noah did in the biblical ark. Once removed from the storm\, we can connect deeply with our life force\, reduce reactivity\, and restore and strengthen ourselves. After this respite\, we’re able to return to our lives with greater clarity and wisdom to respond to the chaos all around us. \n\nThe IJS community will create our own ark of calm this fall\, and we hope you will join us.\n  \n\n\nWe are thrilled to be returning to the beautiful\, serene Garrison Institute in Garrison\, NY\, for a Jewish mindfulness meditation retreat led by IJS faculty and other experienced\, beloved instructors. Over five days\, we will focus on deepening our practice through silent meditation enhanced with Jewish teachings\, meditation instructions\, mindful prayer\, and yoga/embodied practice. We will use silence as a tool to deepen our sense of calm\, safety\, and spiritual development\, following Rav Shimon Ben Gamliel’s teaching that “I have found nothing better for a person than silence” (Pirkei Avot 1:17). \n\n\n\n\nOur days will include time for smaller sessions in two tracks — one for those newer to Jewish mindfulness meditation (including those who are new to retreats) and one for those with more experience. These tracks will offer different length meditation periods and tailored instructions. There will also be opportunities to mindfully explore the beautiful grounds and forested trails of the Garrison Institute. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n TEACHERS\n  \nOur instructors will include Rabbi Nancy Flam\, co-founding IJS teacher; Senior Core Faculty\, Rabbi Miriam Margles; Core Faculty\, Rebecca Schisler; and Senior Faculty Fellow\, Rabbi Jordan Bendat-Appell. \n  \nRabbi Nancy Flam Co-founding IJS Teacher\, is a pioneer in the field of Jewish healing and contemporary spirituality. SUMMARY:Finding Courage In A World On Fire
DESCRIPTION:*****THIS RETREAT IS CANCELLED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE DUE TO UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES******\n\nResting in the Heart of What Is\nA Meditation Retreat for All Practitioners\n  \n“We must become more familiar with our inner spaciousness-where the pleasure \nof resting in awareness is accessible\, sacred & healing.” – Rashid Hughes \nIn a world that moves too fast and asks too much\, we invite you to pause. \nInspired by Rashid Hughes’ contemplative framework: R.E.S.T.-A Practice for the Tired & Weary and Gaylon Ferguson’s Welcoming Beginner’s Mind\, this retreat invites a return to the natural ease and wisdom of presence. Through the liberating practices of rest\, curiosity\, and compassionate awareness\, we’ll slow down and remember the wholeness that has always been within us. \nTogether\, we will also explore the liberating power of beginner’s mind — not as a technique to master\, but as a radical return to the freshness of this moment. In this spirit\, we are not gathering to become better meditators or more productive selves. We are gathering to stop\, to rest\, and to touch the natural confidence and resilience that arise when we release striving and dwell in effortless presence. \nThroughout our time together\, we will: \n\nCultivate the spaciousness of natural awareness\, beyond self-improvement or performance\nDeepen in effortless resting — a trust in being\, rather than doing\nAcknowledge and tend to the symptoms of burnout\, both personal and collective\nInvestigate how slowing down is an act of resistance and an entryway into genuine liberation\nReclaim confidence not as a rigid stance\, but as a tender\, alive knowing that we belong\nBuild resilience through community\, silence\, movement\, and shared presence\n\nThis retreat is open to all practitioners of meditation\, those just beginning\, and those returning again and again. Whether your practice is fresh or weathered\, whether you feel confident or uncertain\, you are welcome here. \nRashid\, & Gaylon offer this retreat not as an escape from the world\, but as a wholehearted encounter with it and with yourself. The invitation is simple: to be here\, just as you are. \nCome rest. Come be. Come begin again. \n  \n  \nTEACHERS  \n  \n  \n \nRashid Hughes is an intersectional-contemplative teacher\, writer\, and restorative justice facilitator who envisions a transformed world where everyone lives with deep connection to nature and one another. He is a certified Mindfulness Teacher\, Yoga Instructor\, Restorative Justice Facilitator\, and Fire Pujari from the Kashi tradition. Rashid is a co-founder of the Heart Refuge Mindfulness Community\, which focuses on mindfulness practices within the experiences and cultures of Black\, Indigenous\, and other People of Color (BIPOC). In 2024\, Rashid served as the Mindfulness Director of the Inaugural Cohort of the Howard University Contemplative Justice Fellowship program. He draws inspiration from various wisdom traditions\, his personal experience as a Black man\, and his teachings emphasize that spiritual practices can serve as a radical source of personal and collective liberation. With great joy\, Rashid is dedicated to nurturing life at home with his wife and daughter. \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \nGaylon Ferguson\, PhD was core faculty in both Religious Studies and Interdisciplinary Studies at Naropa University\, in Boulder\, Colorado. He was an acharya\, or senior teacher\, in the Shambhala International Buddhist community. After studying meditation and Buddhist philosophy with Tibetan master Chögyam Trungpa in the 1970s and 1980s\, Ferguson became a Fulbright Fellow to Nigeria and completed a doctoral degree in cultural anthropology at Stanford University. After several years of teaching cultural anthropology at the University of Washington\, he became teacher-in-residence at Karmê Chöling Buddhist Retreat Center\, through 2005\, when he joined the faculty of Naropa University.\nThe author of three books (Natural Wakefulness\, Natural Bravery\, and Welcoming Beginner’s Mind)\, he contributed the foreword to Black and Buddhist: What Buddhism Can Teach Us About Race\, Resilience\, Transformation and Freedom. \n  \n_________ \nCOVID-19\nThe health and safety of our guests and staff is a top priority for the Garrison Institute. To attend a retreat or event all guests\, teachers\, and staff are required to self-test (at home antigen test is acceptable) within the 48-hour window prior to arriving for a retreat on site\, and to bring a 2nd self-test kit when coming on site. We encourage everyone to self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 and other illnesses before your visit. Like last year\, this retreat will focus on practices and teachings related to the path of the Bodhisattva\, a body of teachings all about a compassionate and wise way of being in world in turmoil. \nThis year we will focus on the theme of Lineage. Each year of this retreat is similarly structured\, and designed to be welcoming to new students\, while still offering a richness of new practices and insights for returning participants. This retreat will include three full days of silence practice so that we can go much deeper into our own experience and support each other’s practice in a way we almost never get to do when we’re in our daily grinds. On the last full day of retreat\, we take more time to process the teachings together in an interpersonal and communal way. \nAt this year’s retreat\, we will practice ample mindfulness meditation. The teachings of the retreat will focus further on teachings and practices from Ethan’s newest book\, Confidence. We will explore “The Four Powers of Confidence\,” with a focus on discovering\, imagining\, and harnessing the deep power that lies dormant in each of our lineages – your ancestral lineage\, your cultural heritage\, and your spiritual lineages of awakening. We will again focus on the pithy meditation practice of “Windhorse\,” along with teachings on how to invoke the support of your lineage and work with any wounds or obstacles that might be present for you when you look to your ancestral and spiritual heritage.” There is no expectation that students are familiar with these concepts before attending retreat! \n  \nTAKING REFUGE\nThe retreat will include the opportunity to formally take either the Refuge or Bodhisattva Vow\, or reaffirm your vows if you have already taken them\, on Friday afternoon\, October 3rd. As we will be approaching the vow from the structure of the Tantric (Vajrayana) Buddhist system\, it is required that a student has already taken the Refuge vows in any lineage if they want to formally enter the Bodhisattva Path. \nIf you would like to formally take the Refuge or Bodhisattva Vow for the first time (it is generally not recommended to take both simultaneously\, but to leave 6 months to a year between the two to work with one before moving on to the next)\, please email connect@ethannichtern.com with your intention. If you do not want to formally take either vow\, you are still more than welcome to attend the ceremony and contemplate the intention and practice of making the commitment to awakening in your own way. The vows are fully optional. Buddhist people\, Buddh-ish people\, and those of us who just can’t stand labels are all welcome at this retreat! \nWe hope you can join this growing annual community of practitioners. \n  \nRecommended Reading\n(bring to the retreat\, or we will have copies on site for sale) \nConfidence: Holding Your Seat through Life’s Eight Worldly Wins by Ethan Nichtern \nFurther Recommending Readings will be shared prior to  the retreat. \n \nTEACHERS\n  \nHead Teacher – Ethan Nichtern \nEthan Nichtern is a Senior Buddhist teacher\, and is the author of the acclaimed book The Road Home: A Contemporary Exploration of the Buddhist Path which was selected as one of Library Journal’s Best Books of 2015\, and one of Tech Insider’s “9 Books That Define 2015.” He is the author of three other books\, and his next book Confidence: Holding Your Seat Through Life’s Eight Wordly Winds. \nEthan founded the Interdependence Project\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to secular Buddhist practice and transformational activism and arts\, and served as executive Director from 2007-2011. \nFor the past 21 years\, Ethan has taught meditation and Buddhist psychology classes and workshops around New York City and North America and Europe\, along with working with students privately. SUMMARY:Breath\, Body\, Mind Workshop with Ron Hershey
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is designed for anyone looking to develop better coping skills for handling stress and anxiety\, and will incorporate ancient and modern techniques to improve physical and emotional well-being. Based on the work of the eminent integrative psychiatrist and author\, Dr. Richard Brown of Columbia University\, this approach utilizes repeated rounds of gentle movement\, guided breathing and meditation to address imbalances of our stress response system. \nAppropriate for anyone regardless of their level of previous experience with breathwork or meditation. \n  \nTIMING\nThe course will run from 2:30 p.m. ET to 5:30 p.m. ET on Saturday September 13\, 2025. \nCheck-in will run from 2:15 p.m. ET to 2:30 p.m. ET \n  \n  \nAbout Breath-Body-Mind\nThis approach has been used very successfully with those who have been previously frustrated in their attempts to meditate. Long time meditators have reported an added dimension to their practices with the BBM approach. Combining simple coordinated movements borrowed from Chinese Qi Gong and a technique known as coherent breathing\, Breath-Body-Mind has been found helpful in the treatment of PTSD. It has been taught to large groups as part of mission relief work in disaster areas such as civil-war torn Sudan and Rwanda\, post-tsunami Japan\, and in post-9/11 New York City\, to traumatized first responders. \n  \n  \nTEACHER\n \nRon Hershey is a nationally board-certified acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist in practice for 28 years. He has studied and taught this approach for the past 14 years. He considers it the single most effective approach for stress and anxiety management. \n  \n  \n_______ \n  \nCOVID-19\nThe health and safety of our guests and staff is a top priority for the Garrison Institute. SUMMARY:Beyond the Mirror: Opening to a Boundless Sense of Self
DESCRIPTION:A DharmaPunx NYC Labor Day Retreat\n  \nJoin us for an in-person retreat over Labor Day weekend as we turn our collective attention toward one of the most liberating inquiries of the Buddhist path: expanding our awareness past our vulnerable identity beliefs—our sense of feeling separate\, unique\, damaged or alone. This small sense of self is shaped by vulnerability\, ongoing social comparison\, feelings of ‘not keeping up with others’ or ‘falling behind.’ \nAnd yet\, outside of this narrow identity there lies what we may call the “transcendent self”—a spacious awareness rooted in a sense of connectedness\, belonging\, fully arriving in one’s life. Freedom from suffering rests upon loosening the grip of the little self so that we can experience life more fully\, with wisdom and kindness for all beings\, including ourselves. \nRooted in meditation\, Buddhist teachings\, and somatic practice\, this retreat invites us to examine the habitual narratives that shape our sense of identity and keep us tethered to cycles of fear\, separation\, and suffering (dukkha). Through cultivating awareness and compassion\, we begin to see the self not as a solid entity\, but as a collection of conditioned experiences. As these constructions soften\, we gain access to a deeper\, freer way of being. \nThe title Beyond the Mirror points to this path of ego transcendence—where the burdens of our personal history\, fears\, and fixations begin to fall away\, replaced by a spacious presence and a relaxed\, interconnected awareness. The illusion of separateness dissolves\, and we begin to experience life from a transpersonal perspective—open\, available\, and unburdened. \nThis retreat will explore four core pathways to this freedom: \nMeditation Practices – Sitting and walking practices that cultivate concentration\, stillness\, and insight\, allowing the mind to rest in silence and clarity. \nRelational Connection – Interpersonal practices that help dissolve the illusion of separateness by tuning into shared human experiences\, emotions\, and existential truths. \nSomatic Awareness – Embodied practices\, including yoga\, breathwork\, and Somatic Experiencing\, that support nervous system regulation and help us drop the narrative of self by returning to the felt sense. \nSkillful Reflection – Dharma teachings and cognitive tools that point the way toward freedom—not by fixing the self\, but by seeing through it with wisdom and kindness. \nThis retreat is open to both new and experienced practitioners. Whether you are stepping onto the path for the first time or deepening a long-standing practice\, you are warmly welcome. We will also offer yoga/movement as an option in this session. \nTogether\, we’ll explore what becomes possible when we move beyond the mirror—and into the mystery of who we truly are. \nThis is an in-person retreat appropriate for both new and experienced practitioners. \n\n  \nTEACHERS\n  \n\n Josh Korda has been the guiding teacher of DharmaPunx NYC since 2005\, and is a regular visiting teacher at Zen Care. He has a large Buddhist mentoring private practice and regularly authors pieces for Lion’s Roar\, Tricycle and Buddhadharma. SUMMARY:LGBTQIA+ Retreat: Waking Up Fabulous - Taking Refuge & Care (2025)
DESCRIPTION:“Caring for myself is not self–indulgence\nIt is self-preservation\, and that is an act of political warfare.”\n~Audre Lorde~ \nOpen to all who identify as: Lesbian\, Gay\, Bisexual\, Transgender\, Intersex\, or Queer +. Co-sponsored by the Insight Meditation Community of Washington\, and Cambridge Insight Meditation Center. \nThis retreat is an opportunity for us to come together as an LGBTQIA+ community and care for ourselves: to remember who we really are and to recollect our true inner goodness. We will explore ways of sustaining a kind heart\, a clear open mind\, and a strong body. We will engage with the ancient teachings and practices offered by the Buddha that cultivate compassion\, wisdom\, and skillful actions. \nAs LGBTQIA+ people\, in these challenging and difficult times\, we recollect the power of community to know that we are not alone\, and that together we can begin the healing of centuries of oppression and trauma within a deep knowing of our interconnectedness and interdependence. We learn to trust the unfolding of our lives and to act for the benefit of all beings. \nThis retreat will be held in Noble Silence. In silence\, we are illuminating the heart and mind. It is a real-time practice of stillness and clarity. Participants are asked and expected to refrain from using any electronic devices. This allows for a rare opportunity to unplug and get to know our own reality show with compassion and wisdom. Within this commitment\, we are the guardians to each other’s solitude while in this precious community. The more we know and understand our inner landscape\, the more we are able to engage with others and the world with both skill and grace. \nGuided meditation instructions\, Q&A\, heart practices\, gentle yoga\, group meetings with a teacher\, and dharma talks will be offered on this retreat. On this rare LGBTQIA+ retreat\, we come together to practice turning towards and caring for ourselves\, each other\, and all that truly matters in our lives\, for the highest good of all. Hope you can join us! \n  \nSCHOLARSHIPS\nThere are a limited number of partial scholarships available for this retreat. Please visit us here for more information\, and to apply. Please do not sign up for the retreat if you have submitted an application. Please wait to hear from us.
