SUMMARY:Virtual: The ABCs of Resilience Training
DESCRIPTION:A 2.5 Hour Applied Learning Experience\nVirtual via Zoom\n  \n \n\nThis training is for people whose work centers on the wellbeing of others. Over two and a half hours\, CBR Director Carlos Rodarte and Faculty member Yikai Xu will guide you through an evidence-based framework for understanding stress\, sustaining compassion\, and bringing your whole self to the people you serve. \n\n\n\nWHY JOIN\nDeepen Your Practice\, Not Just Your Knowledge This training goes beyond tips and techniques. Drawing on neurobiology and embodied learning\, you’ll explore not just what contemplative practices are\, but how and why they work in the body and nervous system. \nDesigned for the Work You Actually Do Whether you’re running a solo practice\, supporting a small nonprofit\, or serving a community-based organization\, this training meets you where you are. The content is practical\, immediately applicable\, and grounded in the realities of frontline care. \nBring Your Whole Self A central thread throughout the training is the importance of coming to practice as your full self. Your cultural background\, lived experience\, and the communities you come from and serve are not left at the door. They are part of the practice. \nWHAT YOU WILL GAIN\n\nA deeper understanding of how to sustain yourself in your work\, building the capacity to stay present\, calm\, and open even in emotionally challenging moments\nAn accessible introduction to CBR’s Awareness\, Balance\, and Connection curriculum\, the ABCs of Resilience\nGuided meditation and periods of instruction you can begin using right away\nA personal workbook to support your ongoing practice\nA self-care manual on how to care for others with an open and undivided heart\nSmall group discussion with peers who understand the challenges of frontline work\nA grounded understanding of how contemplative practices affect the body and nervous system\nAn entry point into a broader community of practice and future CBR offerings\n\n\nThe ABCs of RESILIENCE FRAMEWORK \nThis training introduces Contemplative-Based Resilience’s evidence-based framework through three integrated modules: \nAwareness: Bringing Attention to What Is: Awareness of the neurobiology and psychology of stress\, its causes\, and its impacts. Cultivate present-moment awareness to recognize your stress patterns before they overwhelm you. Learn how mindfulness strengthens your capacity to respond rather than react\, and discover practices that create space between stimulus and response. \nBalance: Sustainable Compassion in Action: Balance of the body and mind through simple techniques for mental\, emotional and physical awareness. Find the equilibrium between caring deeply and caring sustainably. Explore the difference between empathy that depletes and compassion that renews\, and understand how self-compassion is not self-indulgence. It is the foundation of sustained service. \nConnection: Our Shared Humanity: Connection with ourselves and with the people we care for\, through reflection and action. Recognize that isolation amplifies suffering while connection heals. Discover how acknowledging our common humanity across roles\, disciplines\, and differences builds resilience and reminds us why this work matters. \nWHO SHOULD ATTEND\nThis training is designed for frontline professionals who want to deepen their understanding of contemplative practices and how to apply them in direct service roles. It is especially well suited for those working in small nonprofits\, community-based organizations\, and solo or small-group practices across healthcare\, social work\, and public health. \nIf your work involves caring for others and you want to do that work more sustainably\, you’re in the right place. No prior meditation or contemplative experience is needed. \n  \nMEET YOUR FACILITATORS \nThis training is led by two members of the Garrison Institute’s Contemplative-Based Resilience team. Carlos and Yikai bring together expertise in neuroscience\, psychology\, contemplative practice\, and community health to create a grounded and accessible learning experience. \nYikai Xu\, Certified CBR Faculty\nYikai Xu\, M.Phil. M.Ed.\, is a clinician\, researcher\, educator\, contemplative practitioner\, and mentor devoted to healthy equity and compassion across systems. His expertise centers on Asian indigenous contemplative wisdom\, emotion regulation\, psychological health\, and scalable interventions. Yikai is a Ph.D. candidate in the Clinical/Counseling psychology program at New York University. He is currently conducting a randomized-controlled trial to test the effectiveness of a brief online intervention that leverages Asian dialectical wisdom for stress reduction. Yikai is also a clinician at the Psychosis Risk Program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and an adjunct faculty member at the Counseling for Mental Health Counseling and Wellness master’s program at New York University. Concurrently\, Yikai advises and supports organizations (e.g.\, Mind & Life Institute\, Contentment Foundation) to leverage contemplative wisdom to promote individual\, community\, and system-wide well-being.  \n  \nCarlos Rodarte\, Director\, Contemplative-Based Resilience Program \nCarlos brings over 20 years at the intersection of healthcare\, technology\, and contemplative practice to his role as Director of Contemplative-Based Resilience at the Garrison Institute. As a systems entrepreneur and mission-driven executive\, he has built and led organizations applying business strategy to advance health equity and community wellbeing. His career has spanned management consulting with health systems and life-science companies\, leading patient-focused data initiatives at PatientsLikeMe\, and supporting community health centers\, nonprofits\, and startups to advance resilience-based care models and reduce burnout. He has published in peer-reviewed literature on patient-led research and spoken on health innovation nationally and internationally. Formally trained as an environmental scientist with a business background focused on social impact. SUMMARY:Toward Ecological Civilization: Reflections and Possibilities
DESCRIPTION:Co-sponsored by the Pathways to Planetary Health initiative at the Garrison Institute and the Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology \n  \nToward Ecological Civilization: Reflections and Possibilities\n  \nOver the past year\, the Garrison Institute’s Pathways to Planetary Health initiative and the Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology have co-hosted a global dialogue series on Ecological Civilization. The conversations with over a dozen scholars\, teachers\, and practitioners explored the roots of Ecological Civilization in China and opportunities for cultural transformation toward a life-affirming future. \nIn this session\, Mary Evelyn Tucker and Stephen Posner will reflect on the terrain they’ve covered. They will also look forward towards a world in which human development aligns with the flourishing of Earth’s living systems. Together\, they will draw out recurring themes from the series\, describe insights that have stayed with them\, and examine challenges and opportunities. Rather than offering final answers\, this conversation will hold space for the deeper currents and unanswered questions that continue to animate visions of Ecological Civilization across China and beyond.Participants are invited to join a spacious and forward-looking dialogue on what it might take to cultivate more ecologically aware and conscious cultures in a time of profound uncertainty and possibility. \nBefore the session\, we invite you to review summaries of the 2025 dialogues here: \n\nThe Ecological Turn\nCultivating Ecological Civilization: Wisdom\, Practice\, and Systems Change\n\n  \nThis forum will consider questions such as: \n\nWhat recurring themes from the speaker series help illuminate the deeper cultural\, ethical\, and spiritual foundations of Ecological Civilization in China?\nWhere do unanswered questions remain about how self-cultivation and social change together can genuinely support development toward Ecological Civilization?\nWhat opportunities and obstacles lie ahead for developing more ecologically aware cultures that give care to people\, communities\, and the living Earth – in China\, the U.S.\, and other contexts throughout the world?\nWhy is it important to consider the past and how we got here as part of the discussion of where we are now and the ecological civilization we would like to move towards for the future?\n\n\nTIMING\n  \nWe will conduct this live Forum on Zoom at 1:00 p.m. ET on Thursday\, May 14\, 2026. After registering\, you will receive a Zoom link to join the session. \n  \nSPEAKERS\nMary Evelyn Tucker\, PhD\, co-directs the Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology\, which examines cultural and religious values for broadened environmental ethics. This arose from a series of 10 conferences at Harvard on world religions and ecology that she organized with John Grim. She has published several books on Confucianism including The Philosophy of Qi. She co-edited Confucianism and Ecology (Harvard) and two volumes with Tu Weiming on Confucian Spirituality. She is the co-author of Journey of the Universe with Brian Thomas Swimme and the executive producer of the Emmy Award winning Journey film. This was inspired by Thomas Berry whose books she edited and whose biography she wrote with John Grim. They have been traveling in China since 1985 studying Ecological Civilization. \n  \nStephen Posner\, PhD\, is Senior Fellow for Planetary Health at the Garrison Institute and Global Affiliate with the Gund Institute for Environment at the University of Vermont. Stephen integrates science with contemplative practices to build understanding across cultures\, align human systems with nature\, and promote cross-sector collaboration. He has published over 50 technical and non-technical articles on sustainability science and leverage points for systems change. He currently leads initiatives related to nature assessment and ecological stewardship. \n  \n  \nRoots of Renewal:\n Ecological Civilization in China and the Confluence of Tradition and Modernity\nA Garrison Institute Webinar Series on Ecological Civilization\n  \nThe Garrison Institute’s Pathways to Planetary Health initiative is partnering with the Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology to host a six-part online Forum series exploring Ecological Civilization in China—an evolving cultural\, ethical\, ecological\, and policy vision that asks what it would take to align human development with the flourishing of Earth’s living systems. \nRather than treating ecological civilization as primarily technical\, this series examines how social change is shaped by the relationship between tradition and modernity: where inherited worldviews and cultural traditions meet rapid development\, and where inner cultivation and public institutions must be reimagined together. Each Forum features a guest speaker in dialogue with Mary Evelyn Tucker and moderator Stephen Posner\, and invites participants into conversations that connect ideas to practice\, and values to systems change. \nAcross the series\, we move from on-the-ground conservation and thirty years of Ecological Civilization work in China\, to Daoism and classical reading as pathways for self-transformation and social reform—culminating in the launch of a new Yale Forum Ecological Civilization website designed as a living resource for learning\, teaching\, and transformation. \nModerator: Stephen Posner\, The Garrison Institute\nDiscussants: Mary Evelyn Tucker\, Yale University\, along with esteemed speakers \nPlease email us at events@garrisoninstitute.org with questions. \nPrior featured speakers and topics: \n\nGao Yufang — Conservation in China for Ecological Civilization\nZhihe Wang & Meijun Fan — Ecological Civilization: Thirty Years of Work in China\nDaniel K. Gardner — Reading the Chinese Classics for Self-Transformation and Social Reform\nChen Xia — Daoism and Ecological Civilization\nSimeiqi He & Andrew MacIver — A New Ecological Civilization Hub for Learning\, Teaching\, and Action\n\n  \nWe conducted these LIVE forums on Zoom from 7:00 – 8:15pm ET on \nFebruary 18 \nMarch 4 \n March 18 \nApril 14 \nApril 29 \n  \n  \nPlease contact us for questions and inquiries at events@garrisoninstitute.org.
