What Values, Aims, and Assumptions are at the Heart of the Systems We Inhabit?

Hosted by Matt Hawkins and Eddie Harris, Co-Founders, commonplace

In this session we look at what needs to happen to help us break out of systems which fail to meet our needs. We try to make visible the values, assumptions, and rules that have made the systems we inhabit and consider with what we would replace them. From a place of new possibility, we will examine how we can start to make this a reality, examining perceived obstacles and what transformative shifts may be necessary.

Drawing on the wisdom of the map and the members of the Collective, we hope to plant the seeds for a new community – one that can pool its knowledge, tools, insights, and stories to help people reimagine systems. This invitation is extended to all who want to be part of this work – including funders who can catalyze our ambitions for change or organizations and communities who want to use our findings for transformative action.

Zoom links will be emailed within 24 hours of registration. Please contact us at events@garrisoninstitute.org with questions.

HOSTS

Matt Hawkins, Co-Founder, commonplace: Matt has 15 years of experience working in movements and campaigning – and picked up many lessons along the way! The most important for him is the urgent need for campaigns to go much, much deeper and address the deep-rooted values at the heart of society. He’s seen how so many efforts for change can get stuck or undone because they’ve not brought society along with them. As a communications nerd he is also fascinated by how frames and stories can powerfully influence people’s worldviews. When he’s not on the job, Matt enjoys being taken for walks by his energetic Collie, swimming in his local lake, and being a very amateur tennis and piano player.

Eddie Harris, Co-Founder, commonplace: Eddie is an artist, philosopher and strategic coach dedicated to nurturing social change. From grassroots community initiatives to global live music operations, he has worked with teams to create experiences and environments people enjoy and trust. His work focuses on illuminating the narratives, practices, concepts that influence the quality of our institutions and their impact.
