“In a world of noise, confusion, and conflict it is necessary that there be places of silence, inner discipline, and peace. In such places love can blossom.”
Thomas Merton

The Garrison Institute was established in 2003 as a not-for-profit, non-sectarian institute, exploring the intersection of contemplation and engaged action in the world. Our signature initiatives – Contemplative-Based Resilience, Pathways to Planetary Health, the Garrison Institute Fellowship and, in partnership with Garrison Institute International, Compassionate Leadership – leverage the wisdom of contemplative traditions and the insights of modern science to drive social change.
More than just a physical place, the Garrison Institute is an incubator, developing programs that help those working on the front lines of our most important challenges, from trauma transformation to climate change. With your support, the Institute’s blend of timeless wisdom and timely action can radiate outward beyond our walls, touching lives around the world.

Success Stories
Below are some of the projects and programs that have been funded by generous donations from our supporters.
The Garrison Institute Labyrinth
A seven-circuit spiral, boxwood-bordered labyrinth graces the Garrison Institute grounds, thanks to a generous gift from one of our donors. Labyrinths and spirals have had ritual and contemplative significance going back to Neolithic times, and are especially suited to walking meditation. This one is a living reminder of the spiraling, interconnected, organic, vital community that has grown up around the Institute, within which we work together to create transformative change.
Contemplative-Based Resilience (CBR) White Paper and Trainings
We published a white paper that integrates findings from more than 280 interdisciplinary research studies linking contemplative practice and resilience. Funding also supported the CBR trainings that took place at the Institute.
Retreat Scholarships
Funding has been provided so that people can attend our annual LGBTIQ+ and BIPOC Sangha retreats, educators and healthcare professionals can attend contemplative retreats, and those of Himalayan descent can attend retreats from Himalayan traditions.
