From Fragmentation to Integration: Rethinking Leadership for a New Economic Era

Oct 24, 2025

This past week, the Garrison Institute’s Co-founder and Board Chair Jonathan F. P. Rose joined renowned psychologist Dr. Daniel Goleman for a powerful virtual forum.

The conversation, “Fragmentation to Integration: Rethinking Leadership for a New Economic Era,” explored the critical need for our economies to evolve. In a time of accelerating global change, the leaders who guide our economies must adopt an integrated, holistic worldview—what we call Meta-Economics—by weaving together economics with ethics, social sciences, and the natural sciences.

The Inner Foundation for Outer Impact

The conversation’s core insight is that sustainable system change requires inner transformation. Dr. Goleman emphasized that the leaders of tomorrow need advanced Emotional Intelligence (EI) to handle complexity and uncertainty. He demonstrated that simple contemplative practices can strengthen the neural circuits for attention and caring, skills that are vital for making effective, compassionate decisions.

Jonathan Rose then connected this inner work to outer action, detailing the necessity of a new economic system that accounts for all impacts—both positive and negative. He challenged the outdated concept of “externalities,” arguing that every action should be viewed as an effect for which companies are responsible.

“What if we had an economic system in which we not only looked at what we currently are calling the main effect, but we actually looked at every effect, positive and negative, and the company was responsible for them all and rewarded for them all?” – Jonathan F.P. Rose

The Path Forward

The discussion highlighted the importance of moving toward a regenerative economy supported by:

  • Integrated Systems: Designing economies that steer society toward the long-term well-being of both humans and nature.
  • Collective Ownership: Shifting from wealth concentration to models like co-ops and mutual associations that distribute wealth and benefit the entire ecosystem of stakeholders.
  • Cultivated Leadership: Developing leaders who possess the contemplative skills to see systems clearly and the courage to lead with compassion.

This forum perfectly reflects The Garrison Institute’s mission to apply contemplative wisdom and scientific insights to urgent challenges. Jonathan F. P. Rose’s work on Meta-Economics, which he leads as the Chair of our Board, continues to guide our efforts to build a more compassionate, resilient future.
