Bringing Our CARE for Teachers Training to More Educators

CARE Summer Retreat 2013


August 9 – 14, we held our Sixth Annual CARE for Teachers (Cultivating Awareness and Resilience in Education) Summer Retreat, attracting educators from as far away as Australia, Norway, Canada and Colombia. They came to participate in our contemplative-based trainings which promote awareness of the inner experience of teaching, helping teachers cope with stress, build resilience and create positive learning environments so students can thrive socially, emotionally and academically.

As our colleague Rona Wilensky points out, demand for contemplative trainings for teachers is going up, and we’re working to meet it, both by training teachers and teacher educators directly, and also by training CARE facilitators who can qualify to give CARE trainings themselves. At this year’s CARE Summer Retreat, the senior faculty, CARE originators Tish Jennings, Christa Turksma and Richard Brown, working with David Kaiser and Anna DeWeese, split their time between working with about 40 teachers and educators undergoing CARE training and another group of about 20 prospective CARE facilitators who already have extensive experience with CARE and want to become CARE trainers.
